Culture
The Thousand Lords have adopted the clan-based structure of their parent Chapter, with the nine major Clans of Wonthis serving to form the nine Clan-Companies of the Thousand Lords. Much like the Clans of Medusa, the Clans of Wonthis maintain a complex web of feuds and rivalries between them, and the Chapter uses this constant state of conflict to ensure sharp recruits. The Clan-Companies exhibit behaviors similar to those exhibited by the Clans from which they take their name. The Clans are:
- Asdingai: Known for ruthless ambition and industriousness, greatly skilled in uniting the clans for a common goal.
- Helikidai: While still nomadic, will settle in area for longer durations than other clans. The Clan-Company avoids engagements outside of the Sector where possible.
- Koiranidai: Favors night raids, ambushes, and rapid assaults. Wears blackened armor to assist in these tactics.
- Leukidai: Known to be boisterous, non-uniform, and prone to infighting, though fiercly loyal to each other when faced with outside threats.
- Nacharvaloi: Exhibits a religious fervor and zeal not found in other clans.
- Chloridai: Reknowned for their heavy cavalry. The Clan-Company makes a greater use of armored and motorized warfare than others.
- Lakringai: Extremely open to cooperation with outsiders, drawing suspicion from other clans.
- Ouridai: Take great pride in their Grand Caravan on Wonthis. The Clan-Company takes great pride in their fleet.
- Charinoi: A highly insular clan, suspicious of outsiders.
Like the Iron Hands, the Captains of the Clan-Companies, simple called Company Captains, govern the Chapter in a council called the Komitatos. Other figures from Company command are free to advise their Captains at the Komitatos, however only Captains are granted a vote. Chapter Masters are chosen by the Captains. While there is no requirement that a Captain be chosen as Chapter Master, most often, one among them is chosen. The Chapter Master holds the authority to militarily command the whole of the Chapter, however this authority is only invoked in the most dire of circumstances.
On their homeworld of Veridia, the many clans of horse-lords ride the vast open steppes and deserts on the backs of horse-like creatures called the Lykuus. These creatures bear lifespans close to that of a mortal man, and grow incredibly attached to their riders over the course of their lives. Such is their bond that should their riders pass before them, a Lykuus will become depressive and irritable, refusing to take another rider. It is seen as a mercy for the animal to be ritually slain and buried alongside their masters.
The Thousand Lords carry this tradition into their wargear, specifically with their power armor. Should a marine bear his armor for 50 years of service, the time of his first service stud, it is said that the Machine Spirit of his armor has bonded with him. Such is the consequence of the armor's interface with the Black Carapace of the Astartes. To bear armor with a Machine Spirit that has bonded to another is both a cruelty to the machine, but also provides great risk to the wearer. The spirit may cause augurs to malfunction, or joints to seize, putting the life of its new wearer at risk. Thus, should a marine be killed after 50 years of service, the Iron Patriarchs of the chapter ceremonially reforge his armor, the ritual serving equal parts funerary rite and maintenance protocol.
Naturally, the priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus often view the Thousand Lords with a perplexing mix of ire and respect. On the one hand, the rites of the Lords are done out of a desire to soothe the children of the Machine God. On the other, these spirits are killed and unable to give its blessings to others. Out of pragmatism, this results in a neutral relationship between much of the Mechanicum and the Thousand Lords, though this is notably a colder relationship than those held by other Iron Hands successors. The exception to this is the Forge Moon of Lockyer, which the Iron Hands came to the aid of in 384.M41.
